North East England: A Hidden Gem for Surfing
On my travels around the UK Surf spots the most common response you get from other Surfers is “You get surf in the North East”. Well it used to be anyway, now it’s a well known fact that that Surfing in North East England can be some of the best in the UK.
However the problem is not that the surf is not good, but that it sometimes just doesn’t turn up for weeks. The North East experiences irregular surf conditions. This is due to its position on the sheltered North Sea. Unlike the open west coasts exposed to the full force of Atlantic weather systems. The Eastern region’s waves are often more modest and inconsistent. This sheltering effect means that while large swells can occasionally reach the coast, regular and powerful surf conditions are less frequent. However, when the right conditions align, local surfers can enjoy some unique and rewarding waves.
Benefits of surfing the North East
Surfing in North East England offers several unique benefits for Surfers. The region is known for its offshore winds, which create more consistent and cleaner wave conditions. Ideal for surfers looking for smoother rides. With less exposure to the powerful Atlantic storms, the waves here are often more manageable, providing a perfect environment for both beginners and experienced surfers alike. One of the biggest draws of the North East is the less crowded nature of its breaks, with a more relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. The local surf community is known for its friendly vibe. localism does exist in some areas. However most surf spots are a place where newcomers and seasoned surfers alike can and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline without any issues
The North East can be cold
In the winter, the North Sea can get pretty chilly, with water temperatures often dipping to around 4-6°C (39-43°F). This makes it essential for surfers to invest in high-quality surf gear, such as thick wetsuits, gloves, boots, and hoods. Without proper gear, the cold can quickly become unbearable, so having the right equipment is key to enjoying the surf and staying safe throughout the colder months. The temps rise in the summer months but most surfers stay in a 5/3 wetsuit all year round, i like to get into a 4/3 as soon as possible but that just depends on your preferences.
