Surfing Saltburn – a wave for every Surfer
Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a hidden gem on the northeast coast of England, offering a welcoming atmosphere perfect for surfers of all levels. The friendly local community adds to the charm, creating a laid-back vibe that makes it easy to feel at home. The surf here is known for its mellow, consistent waves, making it an ideal spot for beginners looking to catch their first ride. It also has some very good banks for more advanced surfers to play on.
Saltburn is not only a surf haven but also a charming Victorian town with plenty of character. The iconic Saltburn Pier, stretching out into the North Sea, offers stunning views of the coastline and is a perfect spot to take in the surroundings after a surf session. One of the town’s most famous features is its historic cliff tramway, which descends from the town’s high cliffs down to the beach, offering a nostalgic ride with breathtaking views. The blend of Victorian architecture, coastal beauty, and unique transport makes Saltburn a picturesque and vibrant destination for surfers and visitors alike.
Surfing Saltburn
Surfing in Saltburn offers a variety of waves along its stunning coastline, with breaks both to the north and south of the iconic pier. The area features consistent peaks all along the beach, making it a great spot for surfers to explore different sections depending on the conditions. One of the standout spots is Penny Hole, a fun hollow wave that breaks at low tide underneath the cliffs. Further out on the rock shelf you’ll find The Point, the most southern break at Saltburn. The waves here can get a lot more powerful, ideal for those looking for a challenge.
Surfboard selection

Perfect Longboard for surfing at Saltburn buiLt by ND Surfboards
Most people surfing Saltburn are Longboard riders, this is due to the Mellow waves and the fact that the area attracts more learner surfers. However at different stages of the tide you can have some very hollow waves to ride your shortboard. The Area can handle surf up to and above 10ft with a nice rip working under the cliffs when things get big.
The Mini Log is possibly one of my favorite boards to ride at Saltburn due to it’s Longboard feel but mid length versatility Mini Log
